Buster (#438-11)

Buster Buster Buster Buster

1/20/12 Update: Bad news: Buster sheared two pins off. Good news: They broke right at the bolt, not in the middle of the leg. They only replaced those two pins, not all of them. They did further x-rays and decided he is healing well and moved up his checks so that he is scheduled for fixator removal March 12, not March 26!!!! AND the Dr. says the temporary prosthesis is perfect to help reduce the stress of hopping on the recovering right leg :-) So other than loss of a lot of blood :-(, two pin replacements and tremendously drowsy and hungry Wed evening, things are looking much better than expected. Dr. Tintle even sent us some special vitamins to help him through the healing process.

1/17/12 Update: Last week we had to take Buster back in to Veterinary Sports Medicine because he was bleeding from the upper ring of the fixator. They stopped the bleeding and sent him home. But the bleeding has continued, so we took him back in this morning. Buster has broken one of the pins in the middle ring because he has to put all his body weight on that leg when he tries to walk.So tomorrow morning (Wednesday) he is scheduled to have all the pins replaced with stronger pins. Please keep him in your prayers. This poor boy has been through a tremendous amount.

12/28/11 Update: Buster had his week three Fixater check to see how wounds are healing. He has significantly less drainage from the 14 openings. Things are still looking good. He is feeling better, starting to try to play with our Pei (which is a NO NO) so it will get more difficult to control his activity as he heals. Next week is week 4...FIRST xray to see how the bones are knitting. Still daily cleaning, but need only warm water and mild soap to clean the pin openings.

12/15/11 - Buster wishes you all a very merry Christmas and thanks you for the support that facilitated the operation to repair his broken leg. Buster had his first "fixator" check on Monday. Doc says he can go off antibiotics as long as the pins are cleaned daily. The sutures were taken out where they took the bone graft and the scar tissue removal around the broken ankle. He is quite a happy fellow, even with all the special treatments he has to go through. We decided he was well enough to visit with Santa Claws last Sunday.

12/4/11 - Buster's leg was operated on Thursday afternoon, and we brought him home on Friday. By the time he left, all of his attendants at the vet's office were in love with him. The doctor said that the operation was very successful. He grafted some bone from Buster's shoulder and placed in the gap of the broken bone in his ankle to promote better fusing. He also straightened his leg from his elbow to his foot. The Buster's Leg xray shows the device attached to the outside of his leg to hold three horizontal pins in place (they look like wires). The pins, which are like bicycle spokes, go through the interior of his leg and bone to hold the repaired bone securely in place. If all goes well, the pins will be removed when the bones have fused and are healed, a minimum of 16 weeks. His check-ups will be weekly through December and bi-weekly thereafter. The area is heavily bandaged at the moment, but he is already moderately ambulatory and in good spirits. However, he is not allowed to go up or down stairs or to rough house with our other Peibies until the pins are removed. After that he will need a brace to support the leg until the bone has filled in the holes from the pins. That is another couple months.

PLEASE HELP SAVE BUSTER'S LEG! We need $3,000 for his surgery!

Please click here for more information on helping Buster. There is a surgeon who can operate on the right leg for $3,000.00 and give this sweet boy many years of life. The great news is that we have found a sponsor who will match dollar for dollar any donation for Buster that we receive. If you send in $25.00, it will turn in to $50.00, $100 turns into $200.

Please help keep Buster walking and alive. Send your donation (check or Pay-Pal) to:
MACSPRO, P.O. Box 34034, Bethesda, MD 20827 and mark it Buster.

If you would rather use Paypal vs sending us a check, please click on the Paypal donate button.

10/31/11 Update: Buster has been evaluated by two orthopedic vets, and it looks like a pin or rod will have to be inserted into his right leg to hold the separated bones in place. We will continue to keep you updated on his progress. He continues to amaze us. He is house broken, very playful yet gentle, enjoys his (and our Peis) stuffed and other toys. He loves to play tug of war and especially loves to be close to his humans. Our two Peis, Ebon and Mitzi, really like him and vice versa. At times it is difficult to keep them from rough housing too much!

10/18/11 Update: We learned today that Buster must have his good right leg operated on or he will not be able to walk much longer. The cost of the operation is $3,000.00 to straighten and fuse the leg or he will have no usable front legs. Please help with your donation today, no matter how small - every penny counts. You are his only chance. Please.

Buster is an extremely friendly guy. He loves people and other animals. He was born with a small left front leg and foot, so he had to put all his weight on his other front leg. Therefore, he has carpal laxity in his right front, but he loves the security of his new toys and cushy bed. Please come and visit with Buster.

Lucy Liu (#427-11)

Lucy Liu Lucy Liu

Hi, my name is Lucy Liu .

Jan 2012 Update:Lucy Liu was given up by a dsyfunctional lady who kept her alone in the laundry room most of the time. Lucy was adopted by a family with young children. The children dressed her up in play clothes and were generally very close and around her all the time. Lucy was asleep one day when the daughter went to play with her. Startled, Lucy woke and snapped at the girl, so Lucy was brought back to us. She has a thyroid condition and needs her medicine every day. This is an inexpensive medicine and easy to administer with food.

Lucy Liu is a purebred Chinese Shar-pei, female and approximately 5 years old with a beautiful, fawn-colored horse coat. She loves lots of attention and would do well with someone who is home a lot. She gets along with other animals, having previously lived with a small dog and three cats, but sometimes she does not play well with others. Lucy Liu needs a home with older children.

Coco (#429-11)

Coco Coco Coco

Hi, my name is CoCo.

Jan 2012 update: Coco and her son were left outside tied to a broken down picnic table. The neighbors could not stand to see them neglected, and after the owners agreed, the neighbors brought them in to us. CoCo is sometimes dog aggressive because she had little food to eat and was picked upon by other dogs that came into the yard where she was chained. She was adopted by a couple that had a cat. They were keeping the cat in the bedroom, but the wife walked into the bedroom and Coco followed her in. The cat and Coco started a fight and the wife tried to separate them. The cat scratched her. So the husband brought Coco back to us. The man was actually crying when he brought her back.

Angel (#436-11)

Angel Angel Angel

12/27/2011 - Angel is being fostered by a great couple in the Gettysburg area.

This little female (42 pounds) spent most of her approximately 3 years outside, waiting for someone to bring her something to eat (she acts like she is starved). Everyone at the animal hospital fell in love with her as she spent a week there - you see she has heartworm from being outside and having no heartworm protection. Her name is Angel and even Dr. Nichols said the name was appropriate as she really is a little angel. Angel is being fostered by a nice family while she is having her heartworm treatment and quiet time. Won't you be one of her Guardian Angels?

Max (#439-11)

Max Max Max

Max came to us from Prince George's Shelter, MD. His owners must have cared a lot about him as he knows commands and is a very polite boy. One of the owners was going through some very serious medical problems and could not care for him.

Mrytle Mae (#435-11)

Mrytle Mae Mrytle Mae Mrytle Mae

Mae was brought to us from West Virginia. A kind man took her from the county shelter and brought her here. She is a young energetic and friendly Pei. She was adopted and the man wrote glowing emails on how she got on with his two cats. However, he moved into an environment with six cats and little energetic Mae just could not handle the situation. Mae came back into rescue.
